The Old Farmhouse was the original house on the farm and is traditionally built within the ‘square’ of the farm yard.
In the old days, there was no toilet in the house and the rooms were quite different. In recent years, the dairyman lived in the house but in 2010, Portnellan ceased to be a dairy farm and thus there was no role for a dairyman. A plan was made to extend hospitality to guests by renovating the Old Farmhouse.
The Old Farmhouse has been transformed into a lovely, warm, contemporary space, while still maintaining the original external features. The walls have been internally insulated, which has meant that the rooms have shrunk a little to the benefit of keeping the occupants warm and cosy on cold nights. Under-floor heating is provided throughout the ground floor and a wood-burning stove also provides a cosy glow.
